Specialist Courses & Workshops

The following courses have been designed for those who work with the elderly, people with learning disabilities and those with mental health problems, providing knowledge and understanding of these specialist areas of health and social care. If you would like to discuss any aspect of these courses with the trainer, please let us know and we will be happy to arrange it. All candidates will receive a certificate of attendance.

Autism & Aspergers Syndrome one-day course

This course focuses on raising awareness of the experience of the person with Autistic Spectrum Disorder, of which Aspergers is a significant and distinct sub-group, as well as those people involved with them. The course is also practice-orientated and serves to provide a range of working methods, interventions and self reflective exercises to provide the best support possible. Reminiscence Workshop/Life Work one-day course

This interactive course explores what we can do as workers to support reminiscence and memory work with our clients and the many benefits this has to the client's wellbeing. More detailed information on this course is available on request.

Sexuality and Learning Disabilities one-day course

This course will attempt to examine our understanding of this sensitive subject and address the professional skills required to deal with this issue in a caring and effective way, that not only meets the client's needs, without compromising others'. Dealing with Challenging Behaviour 3 hours (approx)

This course aims to give staff the knowledge and skills to enable them to anticipate and avoid challenging behaviour, with the emphasis on self control. It also explores the theory behind behaviour and what triggers it and considers how behaviour may be prevented.

Managing Aggression 3 hours (approx)

This subject is approached in a sensitive way and aims to help participants develop their safe practice in the area of managing aggression. We explore aggression from triggers and other early indicators, how we may be able to minimise it and the use of de-escalation methods.
